Whittleman homers in loss

SPRINGDALE, AR - The Frisco RoughRiders used a four-run first inning to defeat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 9-6 on Monday afternoon at Arvest Ballpark. The win gives the RoughRiders a 2-1 edge in the season series with the Naturals.

The RoughRiders (30-20) got on the board for the third straight game in the first inning. Engel Beltre led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Leury Garcia to make it 1-0. Naturals' starter Noel Arguelles then issued walks to both Jurickson Profar and Mike Olt to load the bases. Val Majewski singled to plate Garcia and make it 2-0. Zach Zaneski also got to Arguelles with belting a two-run double to right field to put the RoughRiders in front 4-0.

The Naturals (26-24) got on the board in the second inning getting a one-out double from Mario Lisson. Lisson stole third and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Paulo Orlando to cut the lead to 4-1.

Profar answered with a home run in the top of the third inning to make it a 5-1 contest. The home run was the sixth of the season for the RoughRiders shortstop, who now has reached base in 45 straight games.

Bucholz tacked on another run with a no doubt homer to left field. Majewski followed with a solo home run of his own to give the RoughRiders a 7-1 lead. The home run was the first of the season. The Frisco offense took advantage of an error by Naturals shortstop Rey Navarro to plate two more runs in the top of the sixth making it 9-1.

The Naturals mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning getting a one out double from Nick Van Stratten. Van Stratten advanced to third on an error. Julio Rodriguez was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Yem Prades ripped a single down the line that plated both runners to cut the lead to 9-3. Prades later scored on an RBI ground our from Christian Colon to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Johnny Whittleman tacked on another run for the Naturals blasting a home run to deep right center field. The home run was the ninth of the season for Whittleman, which is second on the team to Wil Myers' who had 13 before being promoted to Triple-A Omaha.

The Naturals tallied another run in the bottom of the ninth getting a double by Rodriguez, a Prades single and a Colon sacrifice fly to make it a 9-6 game.

Arguelles (2-5) went four and two-thirds innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, while walking three, and tying a season high with five strikeouts. Tim Murphy (2-5) went five innings allowing five hits and just one run for the RoughRiders.

The Naturals have a day off tomorrow before heading to Midland to take on the RockHounds on Wednesday May 30 at 6:30 PM. Justin Marks (3-2, 4.15) against the RockHounds Dan Straily (2-4, 3.86). The game can be heard on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
