Physician of the Year

Dr Ashish MathurDr. Mathur, of Gentry Medical Center, was selected as the SSRH 2014 Physician of the Year.

"Dr. Mathur is known for going above and beyond – giving his personal time before and after normal business hours to support our efforts developing healthcare services," said Kevin Clement, SSRH chief executive officer. "As a medical staff leader, he takes on a lot of responsibility well beyond patient care.

"During 2014, the hospital was transitioning to a new charting system. Dr. Mathur was instrumental in making this change smoother for everyone involved. He was always the voice bringing us together, moving us forward and helping us progress toward our goals. It is an honor to be able to recognize his dedication to healthcare, his patients and the hospital."

Dr. Mathur has been on the SSRH Medical Staff since October 2007.

Non-Clinical Director of the Year

Carmen BurascoBurasco is the human resources director at SSRH and has been with the facility since May 2010. With a focus on customer satisfaction – patient or employee – she works with hospital leaders to ensure everyone at the hospital feels appreciated.

"Carmen always does more than is requested of her," Clement said. "During 2014 there are many examples of her can-do attitude: holiday/awards celebration, employee and physician surveys and training for all employees of SSRH."

"Carmen ensures her events are successful, efficiently done, organized and always cost-controlled," said SSRH Chief Financial Officer Jim Little. "She serves on the hospital's administrative team council and provides valuable input."

"As the human resources director, our management and staff have come to trust her as a confidant and adviser," Clement said. "She is the best person for this job."

Clinical Director of the Year

Jeff CopelandCopeland is the director of radiology and respiratory therapy and has been with SSRH since March 1998. As the department's director, he is responsible for day-to-day operations, including administrative duties, for radiology and respiratory services.

According to Clement, Copeland is always willing to go above and beyond to help the hospital meet its goals – all with a smile.

"He is willing to get out of his comfort zone to support hospital-wide success," he said. "With his computer knowledge, Jeff took on the role of helping create the tools needed for a new charting system at the hospital. In addition to his daily duties and special projects he works on, Jeff is also willing to lend a hand to any department when they need help."

Employee of the Year

Gloria FosterFoster has been a nurse at SSRH for more than 10 years and is known for being a mentor to new graduates and nurses.

Working in several clinical departments at the hospital, Foster recently moved to the medical/surgical unit as a discharge planner.

"Foster was selected for this position to improve hospital discharge processes," SSRH Chief Nursing Officer Maria Wleklinski said. "Since then, she has trained all the nurses in her department on her discharge practices and while also caring for patients. Gloria is a great example of a team player, coach and leader."

Foster was recognized as employee of the quarter during 2014 and has received high accolades from co-workers.

"Gloria is held in high regard in her department," Wleklinski said. "Many of her co-workers have commented on how she takes good care of her patients, that she often will stay late to ensure all her patients are happy and is always willing to do more than she is asked while taking the time to teach and train new nurses. Gloria's excellent attention to everyone she is in contact with – our patients, co-workers and doctors – makes her a true asset to our organization."
