Retiring Faculty Paul Smith and John Carmack to Speak at Commencement

graduate with diplomaSILOAM SPRINGS, Arkansas (May 2, 2017) – John Brown University will hold spring commencement for traditional undergraduate students on Saturday, May 6 at 10 a.m., and graduate and online students at 2 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held in the Bill George Arena on JBU’s Siloam Springs campus.

JBU will graduate 203 students in the traditional undergraduate program and 142 students in the graduate and online programs. Paul Smith, JBU’s professor of vocal and choral music, will give this year’s undergraduate commencement address. Dr. John Carmack, JBU’s professor of marriage and family therapy and graduate counseling program director, will give this year’s graduate and online commencement address. Both will retire this year after 30 years at JBU.

Smith has been a professional soloist, conductor and voice instructor for 35 years. Smith also directed the JBU Cathedral Choir, which tours across the U.S. and in Northern Ireland.

As a licensed therapist for both Texas and Arkansas, Carmack has been in private practice since 1981 and has worked in a variety of settings including churches, Young Life, Christian counseling centers, and psychiatric hospitals and units. Carmack has also served on the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling and was awarded the Clinicians Award from the Arkansas Marriage & Family Therapy Association.
