Siloam Springs, Arkansas (May 22, 2012)
State Rep. Jonathan Barnett announced recently that JBU has received a $5,000 grant from the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District to aid in JBU's ongoing pursuit of being a zero landfill institution.
"I am pleased to announce this grant for JBU," said Barnett. Barnett represents Arkansas State House District 97, which includes JBU. "JBU is a leader in our state in sustainability and this grant will help the university reach its goal of becoming zero-landfill sooner."
JBU began transitioning to a zero landfill campus last year as part of an overall sustainability strategy. The multi-step program includes partnerships with several local waste management authorities and local businesses to recycle everything possible and convert the rest to energy.
"We are grateful for the support from Barnett and the state of Arkansas as we all look for ways to conserve resources, reduce waste, and live and work in a manner that makes environmental and economic sense," said Steve Brankle, director of facility services.
John Brown University is a private Christian university, ranked first among Southern regional colleges by U.S. News & World Report and is listed as one of America's Best Colleges by Forbes. JBU enrolls more than 2,100 students from 41 states and 44 countries. JBU is a member of the council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
