Siloam Springs, ARK. — Main Street Siloam Springs is pleased to announce the start of a new quarterly series of "Downtown Brown Bag Lunches" in 2012. Each lunch will feature a speaker, and will seek to provide knowledge and resources regarding owning historic buildings and the economic benefits of preservation. We are thrilled that our first speaker on February 28th will be Randy Wilson, a long-time preservation architect and founder of Community Design Solutions in Columbia, South Carolina. Wilson is a dynamic speaker who will present on the topic: "Practical Preservation Planning." The seminar will provide real-life examples of the value of preservation and why it is feasible for the average historic property owner.
The brown bag luncheons will be hosted quarterly at a downtown location, from 11:30am-1pm. The first lunch on Tuesday, February 28th will be at the Arvest Bank Downtown Community Room. The series will be most helpful to downtown property and business owners, but all are invited. Please bring your lunch; drinks and a dessert will be provided.
The idea for quarterly lunches started within Main Street Siloam Springs' Economic Restructuring Committee, which seeks to strengthen the economic base of our downtown by coordinating new resources for existing business and property owners, and encouraging new businesses. Committee member Trish Houston, of both Books on Broadway and Houston Enzymes, stepped up to plan the events.
"As the owner of historic buildings, I feel it is important to understand the value that older buildings add to the community. Keeping historic buildings adds interest to the city landscape, and can have a positive outcome for property values," Houston explained of the importance of educating historic property owners.
